Start with the simple checks
Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power. Try the wall button — if it works but the remote doesn't, replace the remote battery. Check whether the manual lock bar on the door is engaged.
Listen to the opener
If the motor hums or runs but the door doesn't move, a spring may be broken or the trolley may be disengaged. If you heard a loud bang recently, look at the torsion spring above the door for a gap.
When to stop and call
If a spring or cable is broken, don't try to lift the door by hand or with the opener. The door can be extremely heavy without spring support. Call a technician.
